Choice

The ability to choose differently is a uniquely human trait. We have the option at any given moment to choose differently than we ever have before, to change, to grow, to learn, to become the person we have always longed to be deep down inside.  Recovery, getting sober, whatever you want to call it, is choosing differently.  It is making the choice to no longer let yourself down, no longer accept anything but your best, no longer trade your self-respect, your life, and your sense of self and worth for a substance.  Making that choice is difficult, it requires a willingness to allow everything to change, because everything must change, and change is very hard for those under addictions spell.  Change is simple but not easy and consistently choosing differently takes patience and practice.  From my own experience, this is where many people get hung up. They will make the decision to change, to get sober, and the first time they make a mistake or fail they give up.  Learning to choose differently is a process and you must give yourself time and patience to develop.  Never give up when you make a mistake or fail, learn from it and keep moving in the direction you were heading.  Choosing differently will bring with it mistakes, we will never be perfect, and we must learn and grow from our mistakes, not give up because of them.  You can choose to no longer allow drugs to control you and your life and making this one simple choice opens to you the entire world.
